Voice for Health Workshop

This workshop is for anyone who would like to learn about keeping his/her voice healthy, and/or would like to explore the increased personal freedom and joy that comes through freeing our voices.

Part One ~ The Essential Body

  1. Posture and Spinal Alignment ~ Becoming more conscious of the mechanics of your skeleton, especially your spine, and learning to sense greater alignment and balance in your body, whether sleeping, sitting, walking, running or dancing.
  2.  Relaxation and Breath Support ~ Increasing your awareness of healthy breathing practices that fully oxygenate your body, relax your nervous system, etc.
  3. Introduction to the Resonators ~ Waking up the main resonators in the body and liberating you from the notion that you can only sound one way.
  4. Releasing Mannerisms that may harm you physically (as in the case of vocal 'nodes' or calluses) or socially (which having an ugly or annoying voice unfortunately does!)

Part Two ~ The Free Mind

Here we give you fun, creative exercises to release negative images you have of your voice, and so that you can experience how freeing your voice releases a better flow of 'chi' or vital energy throughout your body. A vibrant flow of chi helps to restore good health, and your mind follows suit with more positive thoughts and feelings.


One quick story:
...I was teaching a singing workshop at The National Theatre of Ireland when a new girl arrived, very nervous, and announced: "I can't sing. I really can't. I'm terrible. But I'm acting with the company and they said I should come." Less than two hours later that same girl sang us a song in a truly beautiful big 'Broadway' voice. We were all stunned. Turning to me, laughing and crying at the same time, she said, "Who knew?" That is really what I love about working with the voice. We can discover huge, enlivening powers within us that we had no idea were even there.
