Song Performance Training
VMV offers one-on-one personalized Song Performance training for singers and aspiring singers.
The initial work at VMV is on the acting required by each individual piece. We teach you the questions all good actors must answer, which include: Who are you (are you singing in a character for Theatre, as yourself, or as yourself with some kind of personae as in some cabaret acts)? Who are you talking to and what is the fact and feeling of your relationship? Where have you just come from when the song starts? Where are you now? What do you want (your goal, or objective in the song) etc.
Next we analyze the music together ~ the choices the composer and lyricist have made and why, so that you can honor them fully. Then we work with one of VMV’s piano accompanists to tweak your ultimate delivery as a singer and as a storyteller ~ telling the story of the song.
Some students respond well to working intuitively, which means working with images. Ms. Seton grounds that approach in the acting techniques of Michael Chekhov. Others profit from learning the ‘Action-ing System’ ~ a technique in which the performer ‘physical-izes’ an active verb (there are thousands to chose from) for each ‘beat’ of the song, normally playing a new action for each verse and chorus.
Most importantly we work on releasing your Body-Mind of fear, anxiety, projection, judgment, ‘ego’, and other physical and psychological blocks to free, soul-full singing.
You may of course prefer to accompany yourself if you sing and play professionally.
