Accent Reduction

We offers personalized coaching sessions in accent reduction for foreign students and others working in the U.S. who have recognized that speaking better English will benefit them at work and socially.

Once the client is aware of which sounds in his native language create problems of comprehension with his accent in English (‘th’ is not pronounced ‘ze’ for example, sorry!) and is given the technical information about how the English sound is made physically (how lips, teeth, tongue, alviola ridge etc. are properly used)  it is up to him/her to do the work of adjusting those ‘vulnerable’ sounds.

This is not a wildly fun process, admittedly; it’s quite technical and demands self-discipline.  Like quitting chocolate, coffee or cigarettes.  No picnic.  But once you know what you have to do, if you are motivated ~ you just do it.

Two sessions is normally enough to isolate the ‘vulnerable’ sounds and give information on proper placement of the sounds in English and on how to practice.  Which reminds me of the old joke:  A visitor stops a native New Yorker on a street in Manhattan and asks, “How do I get to Carnegie Hall?” The New Yorker yells: “Practice!”
